Teddy Baby Replicas

The Steiff Teddy Baby was designed in 1929 and released in 1930. This comical bear, with a cheerful smiling face, set the tone for Steiff bears throughout the 1930s. The Teddy Baby was first released in a golden mohair but was so popular that he was soon produced in dark brown and white mohair and was eventually produced in twelve different sizes. This wonderful new design had glass eyes which were set into the seam of his muzzle giving him a rather cartoon-like appearance. Some were produced with open mouths, some closed, some even had teeth. Teddy Baby's arms were styled with an endearing "turned-down" pose and his feet were cardboard lined allowing him to stand upright. So magical are the Teddy Babies, that one of the rarities among the designs was chosen to be replicated as the very first Steiff Club bear in 1992 - Teddy Baby Blue.
Continued entertainment was enjoyed with the Circus Bear, who was similar to the Teddy Baby with inset muzzle and flat feet strengthened by cardboard to improve his standing abilities, along with the distinctively angled paws. The first was patented in Heidenheim in 1935 and had a clock work mechanism that allowed him to more realistically. From 1935 to 1939 some 897 Circus Bears were produced, their limited number making them highly prized by collectors.
